Eight Mansions 八宅指南

The classical text

Ba Zhai Ming Jing(八宅明镜)sorts every direction of a house into four lucky stars and four unlucky ones. That is the whole system — and it decides where a piece goes.

Four lucky 四吉

  • 生氣 Sheng Qi — wealth and vitality. The money corner. Geodes, pixiu and citrine go here. Place high, keep it bright, keep it moving.
  • 延年 Yan Nian — relationships and harmony. Rose quartz and paired objects.
  • 天醫 Tian Yi — health and benefactors. Gourds, jade, clear quartz.
  • 伏位 Fu Wei — stability. Smoky quartz and jade — for holding what you already have rather than reaching for more.

Four unlucky 四凶

  • 絕命 Jue Ming — keep it low, quiet and heavy. Never a bedroom.
  • 五鬼 Wu Gui — gossip and conflict. Best used for storage or a bathroom.
  • 六煞 Liu Sha — loss and entanglement. This is where obsidian goes.
  • 禍害 Huo Hai — small recurring troubles. Keep it dark and still.

Three rules that decide everything

  1. Lucky directions want height and movement. Put pieces up on a shelf or a cabinet top — never tucked into a corner on the floor.
  2. Unlucky directions want weight and stillness. Heavy furniture, storage, a bathroom. Suppress them. Do not decorate them.
  3. You suppress a bad direction with the same object you would buy for protection. Which brings us to the part almost everyone gets wrong.

The one most people get wrong: obsidian is not a wealth stone. 化煞 means it absorbs and blocks — so it belongs in the unlucky directions, not on your money corner. Put a black obsidian tower next to a citrine geode and you have cancelled one of them out.

Where our pieces go

Every product page carries the element (五行) and the direction (方位) for that piece, and it is printed on the card that ships with it. If you would rather not think about any of this, buy the piece you like and put it where it looks right — the tradition survived several centuries of people doing exactly that.
