Where to actually put obsidian (most people get this backwards)
There is one mistake we see more than any other, and it is almost always made by people who are trying to do the right thing.
Someone buys an obsidian tower. They read that it is a protective stone. They put it next to the citrine geode on their wealth corner, because both are “good” stones and the corner is where the good stones go.
They have just cancelled out one of the two.
What 化煞 actually means
The Chinese term for what obsidian does is 化煞 — to transform or dissolve sha, the negative current that collects in certain directions. The verb matters. Obsidian absorbs and blocks. It does not attract, generate or invite.
That is the opposite of what a wealth stone does. Citrine, geodes and money trees are placed to gather. Obsidian is placed to stop things arriving.
Put them together and you have built a small machine that pulls in and pushes out at the same time. Nothing happens. It is not harmful — it is just wasted money.
Where it goes instead
Ba Zhai Ming Jing（八宅明镜）sorts every direction of a house into four lucky stars and four unlucky ones. Obsidian belongs to the unlucky half — the four directions you want quiet:
- 絕命 Jue Ming — keep it low, quiet and heavy. Never a bedroom.
- 五鬼 Wu Gui — gossip and conflict. Best used for storage or a bathroom.
- 六煞 Liu Sha — loss and entanglement. This is where obsidian goes.
- 禍害 Huo Hai — small recurring troubles. Keep it dark and still.
In practice, most people do not know which direction is which, and finding out takes a compass and a bit of arithmetic. The working rule is simpler than the theory: put obsidian where you want things to stop. Behind the front door. Next to the bin store. In the corner you never sit in. The direction you sleep facing away from.
The three rules that decide everything
- Lucky directions want height and movement. Pieces go up on a shelf or a cabinet top — never tucked into a corner on the floor. Keep them bright.
- Unlucky directions want weight and stillness. Heavy furniture, storage, a bathroom. Suppress them. Do not decorate them.
- You suppress a bad direction with the same object you would buy for protection. Which is why obsidian, black tourmaline and five-emperor coins live on the unlucky side of the house.
What to wear, and on which wrist
For a bracelet the tradition is right wrist for obsidian — the receiving side, taking in rather than giving out. Whether you follow that or not, the important part is the intention: you are wearing it to keep things off, not to bring things in.
If you want a wealth piece as well, buy it separately and put it somewhere else. They are two different jobs.
Short version: obsidian is a shield, not a magnet. Put it where you want stillness, keep it away from anything you bought to gather.
