Finding your wealth corner: what 生氣位 means and where to put things

Every practical question about feng shui eventually arrives at the same place: where do I put it?

The answer starts with 生氣 — Sheng Qi, usually translated as “life energy” and treated in the tradition as the wealth position. It is one of four lucky stars in Ba Zhai Ming Jing（八宅明镜）, and it is the one people mean when they talk about a money corner.

The quick version

A full reading needs the facing direction of your home and a bit of arithmetic. If you want the practical version instead:

• Stand at your front door, looking into the house.
• The far corner diagonally opposite you — the deepest corner of the room you enter — is the position most often treated as the wealth corner in a single room.
• If the room has an obvious “quiet, solid, bright” corner, that is usually the one people end up using, and in practice it is rarely a bad choice.

What matters more than pinpoint accuracy is that the position is high, bright and undisturbed. A perfect compass bearing with a dark clutter-filled corner is worse than an approximate bearing in a clean, lit one.

What goes there

Wealth pieces in the Chinese tradition are objects that gather:

• Geodes and clusters — a hollow that holds. The most literal object in the whole system.
• Citrine — yellow is earth, earth generates metal, and metal is money. The classical wealth stone.
• Money trees — citrine chips wired into branches, meant to look like something growing.
• Pixiu — the creature that eats gold and never lets it out.

Three placement rules

1. High, not low. A shelf, a cabinet top, a mantel. Not the floor, not under a desk.
2. Lit and visible. If you cannot see it from where you sit, it is not doing its job.
3. One, not five. A single well-chosen piece in the right place beats a shelf of them competing.

What not to do

Do not put obsidian, black tourmaline or salt lamps on the wealth corner. Those are suppressing objects — they belong in the unlucky directions. Mixing them up is the single most common mistake we see. We wrote a whole article about it.

Do not put the corner next to a toilet door or under a dripping pipe. And do not move the piece around every few weeks — the point is that it stays.
