Your first five stones (and why those five)
New buyers make the same mistake in the same order: they buy whatever looked good on the screen, three times, and end up with a rose quartz, an amethyst and a pink agate that all do roughly the same job in roughly the same colour.
Buy by function instead. Five stones, five different jobs.
1. Clear quartz — the one that goes with everything
明鏡, the mirror. One of the seven treasures of the Buddhist tradition, kept for clarity rather than for gain. It is the plainest stone in the shop and the one you will use most, because it works next to anything and does not clash with anything.
Start here. A 10 mm bracelet or a palm stone.
2. Citrine — the money stone
招財. Yellow is earth, earth generates metal in the five-element cycle, and metal is money. This is the most straightforward purchase in Chinese feng shui and the one people understand without explanation.
A bracelet, or a small piece for the desk.
3. Amethyst — the quiet one
紫氣東來, “purple air arriving from the east” — the colour of nobility, and in the tradition good fortune on its way. Worn for a quiet mind, and the stone people give when they want someone to sleep better.
Cluster for the room, bracelet for the wrist.
4. Obsidian — the shield
化煞. Absorbs and blocks. Buy it to keep things out, and put it in a direction you want quiet — not on the wealth corner.
Bracelet for the right wrist, or a piece for the hallway.
5. Rose quartz — the gift
桃花, peach blossom: romance and harmony between two people. By a wide margin the most gifted stone in the shop — buy two, one for you and one for whoever you had in mind.
What to skip at the start
- Big showpieces. A 3 kg geode is a statement, not a starter. Learn what you like first.
- Anything you cannot verify. If the listing will not state treatments, keep looking.
- Sets that duplicate. Three purple stones is one stone.
The order
Clear quartz first, then citrine, then amethyst. That gives you one general piece, one wealth piece and one quiet piece — which covers most of what people actually want from a crystal. Add obsidian when you have a corner you want to settle, and rose quartz when someone’s birthday comes around.
